Job Description
Perform limited clinical duties under the direction of a dentist. Clinical duties may include equipment preparation and sterilization, preparing patients for treatment, assisting the dentist during treatment, and providing patients with instructions for oral healthcare procedures. May perform administrative duties such as scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes.
Working Conditions
Most dental assistants work a standard workweek, which can sometimes include evenings or weekends. Dentist offices must be clean environments, and assistants can expect to adhere to safety and health policies by keeping the treatment area clean, as well as following appropriate protocol for handling and disposing of materials that might pose a potential health hazard. Assistants often work with X-ray equipment and should have the appropriate radiology certification to do so. Dental assistants also spend much of their time sitting while assisting the dentist in the exam room during procedures and while administering treatments.
Minimum Qualifications
Be eighteen (18) years of age; High school graduation or equivalent: Copy of diploma, GED certificate or original/official transcript mailed in a sealed envelope from the school from an institution recognized in the U.S. education system -OR- Proof of college or postsecondary coursework at an institution accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized agency. If high school is outside U.S. and Canada: Copy of high school or postsecondary diploma/transcript with graduation date, Copy of document translated into English, Original/official equivalency report in a sealed envelope from the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers. DANB will return all original documents. As required by Dental Assistant National Board (DANB) for National Entry Level Dental Assistant.
