Armed Forces Day Remarks 2025
May 14 2025

Good afternoon everyone, Ambassador Hoang, Ambassador Doctor Mai, members of the Oregon Legislature, distinguished guests, our special recognition members of the Two-One-Six-Two Infantry Regiment along with your fellow service members representing all branches of our Armed Forces, veterans, families, friends, and my fellow Oregonians.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Oregon National Guard, it is my honor to stand before you today with our Adjutant General, Brigadier General Alan Gronewold.

This Armed Forces Day, we gather to express our profound gratitude for the service and sacrifice of all the remarkable individuals who serve in every branch of our armed forces – Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard. These public grounds in front of our State Capitol symbolize the democratic values that our service members have sworn to protect. It is fitting that we celebrate their commitment in this place that represents the will of the people they serve.

Throughout my life, I have carried with me the value of service that my family instilled in me. My father served our country in the Korean War, and his example taught me the importance of sacrifice and duty to one's country. These are the same values that I see exemplified by our Oregon National Guard and by all the branches of our military.

As I look out at the men and women in uniform assembled here today, I see the living embodiment of what makes our state exceptional. You represent the very best of our country and our state - individuals from all branches of service who have chosen to defend our freedoms and values with distinction and honor.

The service of our military personnel is truly remarkable. Some serve on active duty, devoting their whole professional lives to our nation's defense. Others in the Reserves and National Guard balance both civilian and military careers, maintaining their readiness while contributing to our communities in countless ways. When wildfire threatens our natural resources and communities, our state’s National Guard responds. When floods or ice storms create emergencies, they are there. When our state and nation face unprecedented challenges, they step forward to help. And when our nation calls them to serve abroad, they answer without hesitation.

Armed Forces Day also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the families of our service members. I understand that when someone puts on the uniform, their entire family serves alongside them. The missed birthdays, the empty chairs at holiday gatherings, and the worry during deployments – these sacrifices don't make headlines, but they are the bedrock of our security and freedom.
To the people of Oregon, please know this:  Supporting our military goes beyond government action. It takes communities coming together to embrace service members and their families. When you offer employment to veterans, support a military spouse during deployment, or simply show appreciation for their service, you strengthen our national defense.

It is my great honor to serve as Commander-in-Chief. I am committed to making sure our Guard members and all military personnel have the resources, support, and recognition they deserve. I will ensure that Oregon is always ready and always there for you in return. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to our great state and nation.
