Thank you to everyone – the organizers, advocates, and community leaders – who have made this celebration possible for 27 years and counting.
Thank you for inviting me to join you in recognizing the immense contributions of workers in Oregon from every corner of the state, across industries, generations, and countries of origin.
For over three decades, Oregon's farmworker and immigrant rights movement has used this day to make visible what should never be overlooked: the essential role immigrants play in Oregon's prosperity.
The story of Oregon's workforce is inseparable from the story of our immigrant communities. From our agricultural fields to our hospitals, from construction sites to restaurants, workers form the backbone of industries that sustain our daily lives.
When I look at Oregon's recent labor victories – farmworker overtime, the right to refuse dangerous jobs, paid sick days, and raising the minimum wage – I see the strength of our state. I see what happens when we recognize that worker rights are human rights, regardless of where we were born. These aren't just laws and policies on paper – they're recognition that our state's prosperity should benefit all who contribute to it.
That's why I'm committed to ensuring that every worker in Oregon – and I mean EVERY worker – has access to safe working conditions, fair wages, and the dignity that all workers deserve.
Today, as you march from these Capitol steps to Riverfront Park, you make visible what some would prefer to keep in the shadows. You demonstrate that immigrant rights are worker rights, and worker rights are human rights.
As your Governor, I pledge to continue working alongside labor unions and advocacy groups to build an Oregon where all workers can thrive.
Where no one is exploited because of their immigration status.
Where everyone's contributions are valued.
And where the phrase "our union builds power" rings true for every worker in every corner of our state.
Before I conclude, I want to address the fear that many are feeling right now.
As the federal government wages unlawful attacks on immigrant communities that threaten our values and our right to govern ourselves, I want you to know that I will not back down from the fight. Our immigrant communities make us stronger, and Oregon will not be bullied into violating our principles and our laws. Oregon will continue to honor our long history as a sanctuary state.
As Governor, I am committed to the safety and prosperity of every Oregonian, from recent immigrants to Oregonians who have been here for generations. Our immigrant communities are Oregon communities.
Thank you for your advocacy, your courage, and your persistence. Together, we will continue building an Oregon that works for everyone.
Thank you.
