Good afternoon, and thank you all for being here.

Today, we dedicate a space in the Oregon State Capitol that matters deeply to our democracy. We do so in honor of someone who has embodied the very best of what this space represents.

This press corps area will now bear the name of Peter Wong, a journalist whose work has shaped how Oregonians understand their government for decades.

Peter is known for something that may sound simple, but is anything but: reporting the facts. Carefully. Relentlessly. Fairly.

He is known for asking the questions that needed asking. Uncomfortable questions, clarifying questions, and always the necessary ones. He has done so not to provoke, not to posture, but with respect to ensure that the public record is accurate and complete.

For those of us who have spent years in this building, Peter’s presence has been a constant. I served in the Oregon Legislature for many years, and throughout that time, Peter was here, day after day, listening closely, digging deeper, and holding all of us to account. Governors came and went. Leadership shifted. Political winds changed. But Peter’s commitment to accuracy and public understanding never did.

He reported on consequential legislation and on quiet procedural moments that would have otherwise gone unnoticed but that mattered. He understood that democracy isn’t just made in the big headlines, but in the details.

And that’s why it is so fitting that this space carries his name.

This dedication is not just about honoring one individual. It is also about affirming the essential role of a free and independent press.

We are living in a moment when truth, facts, and public trust are too often challenged. Misinformation spreads faster than verification, and confidence in institutions is deliberately undermined. In times like these, the work of journalists is not peripheral to democracy; it is foundational.

A healthy press corps does not exist to please those in power. It exists to serve the public. To verify. To contextualize. To insist on facts, even when they are inconvenient.

Peter Wong exemplified that responsibility. His reporting showed that rigor and fairness are not opposing values. And his work reminded all of us who serve in government that transparency is not a burden; it is a duty.

This space will continue to host future generations of reporters who will ask their own tough questions, chase their own leads, and help Oregonians understand how decisions are made inside these walls. My hope is that Peter Wong’s name here serves as both an honor and a standard.
