Workers Memorial Day Remarks

Workers Memorial Day Remarks
April 28, 2026

Thank you for being here today. Workers Memorial Day is a solemn reminder of a truth that can never be negotiable: every worker deserves to make it home safe at the end of their shift.

Every day, people across Oregon go to work to provide for themselves and their families, and we must do everything we can to make sure they return home at the end of their shifts, safe and sound.

Last year, thirty-seven Oregonians died on the job from injuries sustained while working. Each of those thirty-seven people represent a chair at the dinner table that’s now empty. A parent who won’t be there to watch their kids grow up. A friend whose presence is deeply missed.

No child should lose their parent because their workplace wasn’t safe. No partner should lose their loved one because necessary protections weren’t in place. Behind these numbers are people. Lives. Stories. And today, we remember them. But remembering isn’t enough – we must recommit ourselves to action.

As Governor, I am committed to working in partnership with labor to ensure every worker is shown dignity and respect on the job. That means strong safety standards. It means enforcement and accountability. And it means never accepting that workplace deaths are simply the cost of doing business. They are not.

To the families here today who have lost a loved one, I am so sorry for your loss. Your loved one is not forgotten. Their lives mattered. And I will keep fighting to until no other family has to endure what you have.

To the labor leaders and advocates here: thank you for never stopping the fight for worker safety. I’m proud to be a partner in this work with you
