Free CE Training: What Oregon Licensees Need to Know About Smoke & CO Alarm Laws

March 2026

Whether you're helping a client sell a home or advising a landlord on their obligations to tenants, Oregon's smoke and carbon monoxide alarm laws are something every real estate licensee needs to understand, and the Oregon State Fire Marshal (OSFM) makes it easy to get up to speed.

OSFM is offering its popular Oregon Smoke & CO Alarm Laws for Selling or Renting a Home course free of charge this spring, with three upcoming sessions available via live webinar. Best of all, each session earns you one hour of continuing education credit in Real Estate Consumer Protection.

Why It Matters

Oregon law requires that smoke alarms be properly installed before a home can be sold or rented. If a home has a CO source, functioning CO alarms must be in place before a sale can close. For homes built in 2011 or later, CO alarms are required regardless of whether a CO source is present.

For property managers, the obligations don't stop at installation. Owners of rental properties must provide working batteries and written testing instructions at the start of a new tenancy, as well as respond promptly when tenants report alarm deficiencies in writing.

About the Course

The 50-minute interactive webinar covers residential smoke and CO alarm requirements as they apply to home sellers, buyers, landlords, and renters. Certificates are issued directly by OSFM, and each session is capped at 35 attendees, so register early to secure your spot.
