Waste-Free DAS
Lunches
Some tips for a waste-free lunch:
 Pack in a reusable box or bag. (A paper or plastic bag counts if you use it again.)
 
Leave uneaten or partially-eater foods in the lunch box/bag to eat later rather than throw away.
 
Recycle containers/materials (aluminum cans, plastic bottles, etc.).
 
Pack very little trash in your lunch box/bag;(paper napkins, chip bags, or plastic wrap, for example).

Potlucks and Parties
If you are the guest:
Before the event, ask the host if you should bring your reusable tableware. Disposable plates, cups and silverware will no longer be provided for DAS events.
 
If you bring an item to share for the event, plan on finger foods or other items that don't require silverware or plates to enjoy. Also, find ways to keep foods warm or cold without using electricity - instead of a crock pot, heat your item at home and bring an insulated container that will maintain the heat until the party time.
 
Coordinate with your coworkers on the best way to wash your tableware after the event so there is not a long line or space concerns in buildings with limited break rooms. Never clean in the restrooms - always use a sink in a kitchen or break room. Scrape your plates well to ensure the drains do not plug.
 
Congratulate yourself on helping DAS move towards a more sustainable agency!
 
 
If you are the host:
Invite Your Guests. Remind everyone this is a Zero Waste event.
 
Educational Signage. Clearly label containers for recyclables and other information about the event.
 
Garbage. Make sure to remove trash cans from your event, since you've made them obsolete. Remind guests we now have Zero Waste events and help them participate.
    
 
Assess Your Event Needs. Take an inventory of the foods and drinks you will be serving, numbers of guests and what tableware your event will require. If desired, purchase compostable tableware made of recycled paper or vegetable starches.. Tip: Consider whether you really need tableware: reusables don't create any waste. If you don't have enough, ask guests to bring their own. Serve finger foods and utilize bread bowls and ice cream cones to avoid the need for tableware.
 
Recycle your materials. Ensure the custodians are aware of the material in a conference room.

Public Events

Pre-event:
• Consult and coordinate with event staff regarding best practices in event recycling for your event. Planning sessions will involve: event promoter, food vendors, site crew and local haulers.
• Volunteer Recruitment – in many ways this is the most difficult job but also the most important.

During the event:
• Set up and maintenance of public bin collection system throughout the event.
• Set up and maintenance of appropriate compost and recycling bins for food vendors. The needs of food producers are much different than those of the public – larger rolling bins, are employed as well as “vendor recycling areas.”
• Set-up safe and efficient transfer station and sort area. Assessment and sorting of all materials brought to the station.
• Hand-sorting all recyclable materials to eliminate contaminants and retrieve returnables.
• Monitor all bins, drop boxes, dump boxes and containers within the transfer station to ensure they are being filled only with the proper materials; i.e. waste only in waste bins, co-mingled recyclables (cardboard, aluminum, plastic containers, clean paper etc.) in co-mingled bins, compostable materials only into compost bins.
• Coordinate, train and supervise volunteer staff.

Post Event:
• Maintain post-event recycling presence – until all waste generators have left the event.
• Continue transfer station/sort operation as needed during the critical event break down period.
• Breakdown & clean-up of all bins and other facilities.
• Provide promoter with detailed assessment of the event including: weights and percentages of materials diverted, evaluation of this years event and suggestions for your next event.
