They read work orders that accompany integrated circuits to determine programming specifications. For the apprenticeship program described here, the program logic controller installs and modifies food-processing equipment.
Working Conditions
In a food processing plant, conditions may be damp or wet.
Beginning apprentices start at about 50 percent of the journey-level wage. Upon successful completion of required class work and on-the-job hours, wages increase usually every six months, until reaching the journey-level rate.
Length of Apprenticeship
The apprenticeship lasts four years. Apprentices must complete a minimum of 144 related classroom hours per year and 8,000 on-the-job training hours.
Minimum Qualifications
Apprenticeship applicants must be at least 18 years of age. In addition, they must provide proof of high school graduation or general education development (GED) equivalent.
Local apprenticeship committees may require additional qualifications.
These programs are limited to current employees of training agents registered with the local apprenticeship committee. They are relatively small programs within the food processing industry and have limited opportunities available.
