Renewing a Driver License

This page provides information about renewing your Oregon driver license.

When You Can Renew
You can renew your driver license up to fourteen months before the expiration date and one year after the expiration date (unless you qualify for a military exemption).

If your license is expired over one year and you do not qualify for the military exemption you will have to apply for an original driver license.

If your license expired over one year while serving active duty in the United States Armed Forces your license remains eligible for renewal up to six months after you are discharged.

Other Important Information
If you are temporarily outside of the state and cannot come to an Oregon DMV office, you may call DMV at (503) 945-5000.

DMV mails driver license renewal reminders two months before your license expires. If you do not receive a renewal reminder in the mail, you are still required to renew your license in person at a DMV office before it expires.

After you meet the requirements for renewal, you will be given an interim card to use until you receive your license in the mail.

Your license will be mailed to your address on file with DMV. It is important that you give DMV the address where you receive your mail since driver licenses are not forwarded by the post office. If you have a forwarding order or hold order on your address your driver license will be returned to DMV as undeliverable.

If you surrender a previous driver license, instruction permit or ID card, it will be hole-punched and returned to you. The hole-punched card is not valid by itself, but may be used as additional proof of identity with the interim card.

To Qualify/Apply

You must apply in person at a DMV office, and you must:

If you are renewing a commercial driver license you must meet additional requirements.

Note: Due to the added costs of merchant fees, DMV offices only accept cash or checks and do not accept credit or debit cards; however many office locations have ATMs available.
