As directed by Senate Bill 1580 during the February 2012 Legislative session, Governor Kitzhaber established the Patient Safety and Defensive Medicine (PSDM) Workgroup to recommend a medical liability legislative proposal for the 2013 Legislative session. To ensure diversity, Workgroup members consisted of one licensed physician, one trial lawyer, one public member, one health system executive, and Legislators from both parties of the House and Senate. The Workgroup’s efforts were guided by the following principles:
- Improving patient safety,
- Effectively compensating injured individuals, and
- Reducing medical liability system costs.
The Workgroup held three meetings and was staffed by the Office for Oregon Health Policy and Research (OHPR). Please use this website as a resource.
