Acute gastroenteritis (AGE), defined as diarrhea or vomiting, is a major cause of illness in the United States; an estimated 179 million episodes occur annually. Noroviruses are the leading cause of epidemic gastroenteritis, detected in ~50% of AGE outbreaks across the United States and Europe.
Oregon FOMES is one of CDC's Food Safety Centers of Excellence. Together with partners, we work to improve the effectiveness of foodborne disease surveillance and outbreak response.
When applicable, refer to Gastroenteritis investigative guidelines for outbreaks in:
1) Collect preliminary data, specifically
2) Call ACDP at 971-673-1111 for referral, if indicated, to the ACDP Urgent Epidemiologic Response Team (UERT).
