Emergency Contraception (EC) after Sexual Assault

As of January 1, 2008, Oregon law requires hospitals to:

  • Inform sexual assault victims about emergency contraception (EC) and treatment options, and
  • Provide EC pills upon request to sexual assault victims before they leave the hospital.

Materials for Hospitals and Survivors

The law requires OHA to produce informational materials relating to emergency contraception for the prevention of pregnancy in victims of sexual assault, to be distributed and used in all hospital emergency departments in Oregon. These files are in portable document format (pdf) and require Adobe Reader software to be read and printed.

This fact sheet must be provided to every female victim of sexual assault of reproductive capacity who presents at a hospital after a rape.

This poster must be placed in exam areas and other appropriate locations within the hospital Emergency Department where patients can see it.

How To Report Hospital Noncompliance

If you or someone you know is a sexual assault victim who was not offered EC information or was refused EC in the hospital:

  • Contact the Oregon Reproductive Health Program for help at 971-673-0355; or
  • Complete an Initial Complaint Intake Form and mail to the address below in an envelope clearly marked "Confidential."
