Indemnity benefits

Highlights

  • In 2022, an estimated $720 million was paid for workers’ compensation claims. This was 7.6 percent more than in 2021. Of this amount, an estimated $342.2 million was paid for indemnity benefits; the remainder was paid for medical services.
  • Most indemnity payments are paid for accepted disabling claims. In 2022, an estimated $314.6 million was paid. Of this amount, 50 percent were temporary disability payments, 10 percent were for permanent partial disability awards, 32 percent were for negotiated settlements, 7 percent were monthly awards for death and permanent disability benefits, and less than 1 percent was for vocational assistance.
  • The Workers’ Benefit Fund (WBF) pays some workers’ compensation benefits. In 2022, the WBF made $71.1 million in payments for two types of benefits. Nearly $45 million was paid for monthly awards for death and permanent disability benefits, and more than $26 million was paid for two return-to-work programs, the Employer-at-Injury Program and the Preferred Worker Program..
