Workers’ Compensation Insurance Plan – assigned risk in Oregon

The following are tips for employers applying through the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) for coverage with the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Plan, commonly known as the Oregon assigned risk plan .

Applicants may need the following information to get insurance coverage with NCCI:

  1. Employer Identification Number (EIN) — required
  2. Oregon Secretary of State registry number — may be required
    • Businesses that need to register with the Secretary of State include business/nonprofit corporations, limited liability companies, or those that use an assumed business name (doing business as, or dba). Sole proprietors or general businesses are not required to register if the name of the business includes the “real and true” name of each owner. Refer to the Secretary of State’s business registration FAQ.
    • Note the name and telephone number of any Secretary of State staff member who tells you that your business is not required to register; be prepared to share this information with an NCCI representative.
  3. An Oregon business identification number (BIN) — may be required
    • The BIN is used for reporting Oregon’s quarterly taxes in one combined form.
  4. Previous workers’ compensation insurance coverage information (for example, insurer, policy number, and effective dates).
  5. Job classification codes for the various subject workers or provide the job description to establish the correct classification.
  6. The number of workers and an estimate of the gross wages paid in those classifications.

You may submit an assigned risk application online.

If you run into online application problems, you may ask NCCI to take your application by phone instead.

Applying by phone will work best if you have the NCCI website up before calling.

Call NCCI at 800-622-4123 (toll-free). Ask for the Oregon desk and for an NCCI representative to help with the application.

At the end of the process, you will need to make payment by check or credit card and have the ability to send and receive a fax. There are partial payment options for deposits required when the premium is greater than $1,000.

Finally, make note of your application number for future reference.
