USDA accreditation

The USDA National Veterinary Accreditation Program authorizes veterinarians to perform state-federal regulatory work such as issuing Certificates of Veterinary Inspection and performing program disease work including Equine Infectious Anemia or TB testing, and Brucellosis vaccination. Veterinarians must be initially accredited by the USDA and then authorized in each state in which they practice.

Two different categories of accreditation are available.

  • Category I accreditation allows veterinarians to perform accredited work only on companion animals (dogs, cats, amphibians/reptiles, furbearing animals, laboratory animals, and non-human primates).
  • Category II accreditation allows veterinarians to perform accredited work on any species of animal.
