Renewing a Commercial Driver License (CDL)

General Information

Beginning July 8, 2015, Oregon law requires that you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent lawful resident to qualify for an original issuance or renewal of a CDL.

Renewal Notice Reminders

Renewal notice reminders are mailed to most CDL holders two months prior to expiration of the driver license. You must renew your CDL in person at a DMV office. You can renew your driver license up to one year before and one year after the expiration date.

How to Renew a CDL

After you meet the requirements, you are issued an interim card to use until you receive your license in the mail. Your license is mailed to your address on file with DMV. It is important that you give DMV the address where you receive your mail since driver licenses are not forwarded by the post office. If you have a forwarding order or hold order on your address your driver license will be returned to DMV as undeliverable.

If you surrendered a previous driver license, permit or identification card, it will be invalidated and returned to you. The invalidated card is not valid by itself, but may be used as additional proof of identity with the interim card.
