Why this project is necessary
Picture of existing Amtrak train station in Chemult, Oregon.
The existing Amtrak train station in Chemult, Oregon.
There are currently approximately 9,000 passenger trips at the Chemult facility each year.  This is expected to increase by 2% per year so that by 2030 there will be nearly 14,000 passenger trips annually.  This is the closest passenger railway station for Bend, La Pine, Prineville, Redmond and Sisters.

The current 10’ x 20’ metal structure does not provide adequate protection to railway passengers embarking and debarking on Amtrak.  The building is un-insulated so it is hot during the summer and cold in the winter.  It is not aesthetically pleasing and does not fit into the current character of the community of Chemult.  There are no restroom facilities for passengers.

The platform and the ramps/steps leading to the platform are deteriorating and need to be repaired or replaced.  The current handicap ramp does not meet current ADA standards.

The current station does not provide traveler information for either those using the passenger railway service or those visiting the local area.

What is being planned
The current metal structure will be removed and a new structure built across the parking lot on the west side of Depot Street.  The new structure will be a Cascadian design to better fit the character of the area.  It will be approximately 300 sq. ft. in size to meet the projected increase in ridership and will provide railway passengers protection from the weather extremes common to Chemult.

The ramps and steps will be reconstructed to meet current ADA standards.

An information kiosk will be built inside the new station to provide travel information for both railway passengers and travelers using US 97.

The current plan is to provide restroom facilities for railway passenger through an agreement with a local business.  However, the new site is large enough to accommodate a restroom if the decision is made to build one in the future.
