  • Truck climbing lane to improve safety and efficiency on I-5
SextonMt15climblane2013.gifSome of the steepest grades on the interstate highway system are located on Interstate 5 in southern Oregon. Although most freeway climbs are built on grades of 5.0 percent or less, northbound I-5 traffic must climb a 6.13 percent grade to reach Sexton Mountain pass. Northbound trucks frequently slow to less than 30 mph, and the difference in speed between these trucks and other vehicles on I-5 can be hazardous. To address these problems, ODOT will build a 2.8 mile long climbing lane from the Hugo interchange, at the base of Sexton Mountain, to the top of the pass, among other improvements. Read more about the project.

  • Popular seasonal highway opens

The McKenzie Pass Highway (Oregon 242) in the central Oregon Cascades opened to all traffic June 16. ODOT closes the highway seasonally. Motorists driving on this beautiful, but curvy road need to be aware of bicyclists and pedestrians on the roadway. Vehicles longer than 35 feet are prohibited from using the highway.
