OREGON'S STATE EPIDEMIOLOGICAL OUTCOMES WORKGROUP (SEOW)

Oregon's State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup (SEOW) was formed in June 2006, to facilitate the use of data in policymaking and program development for substance abuse prevention at the state, county, tribal and local community level.

The SEOW is responsible for compiling information, analyzing, and reporting substance use incidence, prevalence and related data and National Outcome Measures (NOMs). 

These data will in turn be used to assess, plan and implement state, county, tribal and local prevention policy and programs. Oregon's SEOW includes representatives of agencies that supply or use data regarding alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; state, county and tribal Prevention Coordinators; research organizations and universities; the Governor's Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs; the Governor's Advisory Committee on Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants; the Oregon Indian Council on Addiction and the Oregon Prevention, Education and Recovery Association.

The information on this web page is the result of the work of the State Epidemiological Outcomes Workgroup, financed by a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The goal in producing these reports, fact sheets and data tables is to assist in community prevention efforts.

Data from eight sources was pulled together to summarize the nature and magnitude of alcohol, tobacco and illicit drug use and relate consequences in each county. Each county report contains data on 39 measures related to alcohol, tobacco or illicit drugs, including:

• Mortality data
• Rates of abuse or dependence
• Rates of crime
• Adult use

• Prescription Drug Use by Youth in the U.S. and Oregon (March 2009) (Powerpoint): Use of prescription drugs to get high ranks 4th among 11th graders and 5th among 8th.  Oregon youth who use prescription drugs to get high are more likely to drink alcohol or smoke marijuana or cigarettes than those do not.  They are more likely to get grades of C or lower, more likely to report fair to poor mental health and much more likely to think that alcohol, marijuana and cigarette smoking is a little wrong or not wrong at all.
