Tired of waiting for a copy of a popular book? Planning a trip and wanting to take some good reading with you but limited on space? We have your solution: BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download)!

BARD allows patrons FREE access to download any NLS digital book they want, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. No more wait lists; no more due dates; no more mailing books back and forth. And there are no limits: you can download as many books as you want, and so can every other BARD user. For FREE!

Staff from institutions like libraries, care homes and rehab centers are also welcome to create BARD accounts to help demonstrate the service to clients or download books for patrons (visit our Institutional Services page for the link to the application for institutions).

If you are already a BARD user, you can log in here

If you would like to apply for the BARD service, click here. NOTE: you must first be a registered patron of Talking Books before applying for BARD. To register, print out a copy of our application below under Registering for Service, fill it out, and mail it in to our return address.

The Library of Congress’s National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS), our parent federal agency, is conducting a nation-wide survey to understand how to better serve the needs of readers of audio books and Braille.
Take the survey now to let your opinions be heard and help them better serve you!  To take the survey online, go to www.LibraryOfCongressSurvey.org.  If you have trouble taking the survey online you can call 1-866-545-1618 to schedule a time to take the survey over the phone.  You do not have to be a current NLS user to take the survey.  Your answers to the survey questions will be kept confidential.

NOTICE: Our Equipment Coordinator would like to share some tips and tricks to help ensure the best performance from your digital player while operating on the battery. Click here for more information.

NOTICE: Beginning with the July–August 2012 issue, Talking Book Topics will announce up to five hundred titles per issue to eliminate a backlog of unannounced digital talking books. Due to space and cost considerations, the National Library Service has decided  titles will be temporarily listed with one-line annotations of their subject categories and tags for violence, strong language, or explicit descriptions of sex. This change will continue until the backlog is reduced, then Talking Book Topics will return to its standard annotations.  The National Library Service hopes patrons will appreciate the larger selection of titles.
