Catalog and Repair Checker Volunteer The Catalog and Repair Checker Volunteer will support the evaluation of materials in our Oregon Collection. The volunteer participates along with library staff in performing a first level evaluation of materials in the Oregon Collection. Time commitment is 2 hours per week with a duration of approximately 6 months. Major tasks include:
- Check titles in the collection against the online library catalog to determine if they are cataloged, and if the cataloging record is complete; flag titles that need additional cataloging
- Using a specific set of criteria, evaluate items in the collection to determine if they need any repairs; flag items for repair as appropriate
We are looking for a volunteer who has the following skills: ability to search a library catalog and interpret records; ability to distinguish between a monograph and a serial; ability to read, understand, and apply criteria to determine if an item is in need of repair. General Requirements are: work independently; ability to use an online library catalog; ability to locate items in library stacks; ability to use email; ability to use a computer; knowledge of standard Microsoft Word and Excel applications; and possess strong analytical skills. Cataloging experience is helpful. The environment is dusty with book dust. The physical requirements include the ability to stoop and reach for library materials, and to load and unload a shelf of books onto a library cart and back on the shelf. Training will be provided for all assigned tasks. Location is at the Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, Oregon 97301. Book Inspection Volunteer The Book Inspection Volunteer assists the circulation staff in the inspection of returned Talking Books in cassette and digital formats for the Talking Book and Braille Services at the Oregon State Library. The time commitment is two hours per week. We currently have the Monday afternoon shift available at 1:00-3:00. Talking Books is a free library service for anyone who is visually impaired or print disabled. The task consists of inspecting the returned books matching book box label with cassettes or digital cartridge, checking for the correct title, author, number of tapes, condition, and re-winding tapes as needed. This is a production environment - following a multi-step process and working up to an acceptable processing speed. We are looking for volunteers who have the following skills: ability to read 5 digit numbers accurately, have the ability to sit at a table and twist side to side to remove books from postal mailing tubs, ability to sit for long periods of time, ability to work with confidential patron data, ability to follow written and oral standard procedures and directions, and have good dexterity. Training will be provided for all tasks. Location is at the Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, Oregon 97301. Book and Document Mending Volunteer The State Library is looking for two volunteers who want to learn the art of book and document repair. Volunteers will work as a group and will learn to mend and repair library materials which is most helpful to the preservation of historical information. All required equipment and supplies are provided. Training will be provided and the group works together to trouble-shoot mending issues for the books and documents. This group of volunteers meet every Tuesday or Thursday morning at 9:00-11:00 at the Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem, OR 97301. Genealogy Information Volunteer Do you like solving mysteries...and detective work? We are looking to fill one shift with a volunteer to help people research their family history on Friday afternoons. Typically, a volunteer fills one shift per week. The Genealogical Research Center is a partnership project of the State Library and the Willamette Valley Genealogy Society. Resources and assistance are available to anyone doing family history research. This volunteer opportunity assists library patrons with genealogy research using CD's, databases, books, reference materials, online catalogs, and microfilm. Qualifications: Good knowledge and background in genealogy research, database search and research experience, ability to work with the public in person, by phone and email. Training is provided. Shifts available: Friday afternoons at 1:00-5:00. Location is at the Oregon State Library, 250 Winter St. NE, Salem.
