Become a Driver Training School (Class C Non-Commercial Only)

 
You need to be certified by DMV to teach people how to drive a non-commercial vehicle such as a car. To do this, a business needs to obtain a certification to operate a school that teaches people to drive. The certificate is called a Commercial Driver Training School Certificate.

How to Qualify/Apply

To qualify to teach students, the school must be certified by DMV and meet all qualifications or be exempt from certification. The school operator must either be, or employ, one or more certified instructors.
 
To apply, you must: 
  • Complete a Commercial Driver Training School Application (Form 6050); 
  • Provide proof of: 
    • $2,500 bond;
    • Insurance in the amount of $50,000 for injury to or destruction of property, $100,000 for physical injury to or death of one person, and $300,000 for physical injury to or death of two or more persons; and 
    • List of fees for instruction; 
  • Register your school name with the Secretary of State Corporation Division and provide the registry number; 
  • Send a list of all instructors to be certified and training vehicles used by your school: 
    • Instructors must be qualified (see OAR 735-160-0075); and 
    • Training vehicles must be equipped with dual controls of a type approved by DMV (see OAR 735-160-0040); and 
  • Pay a $400 application fee.
Submit your completed application, supporting materials and payment by mail to DMV Headquarters, Third Party Programs at 1905 Lana Ave NE, Salem, OR 97314.

Renewal

Commercial Driver Training School Certificates are issued on a two year cycle. The certificates are good for up to two years from the date of issuance. Third Party Programs will email a renewal notice to the school. 
   
To renew your certificate you must:   
  • Complete a Commercial Driver Training School Application (Form 6050); 
  • Provide proof of insurance in the amount of $50,000 for injury to or destruction of property, $100,000 for physical injury to or death of one person, and $300,000 for physical injury to or death of two or more persons; and 
  • Pay the $400 application fee. 
The new certificate will be emailed to your school/facility upon successful processing of your renewal materials.
