Required Trainings for Licensed Child Care

Introduction to Child Care Health and Safety

Required For: All caregivers in licensed facilities

Format: Online

Time Needed: About 2 hours

The Training Covers:

  • Prevention and control of infectious diseases
  • Prevention of sudden infant death syndrome and use of safe sleep practices
  • Administration of medication
  • Prevention and response to emergencies due to food and allergic reactions
  • Building and physical premises safety
  • Prevention of shaken baby syndrome and abusive head trauma
  • Emergency preparedness and response planning
  • Handling and storage of hazardous materials and the disposal of bio-contaminants
  • Appropriate precautions in transporting children

Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN)

Required For: All caregivers in licensed facilities

Format: Online

Time Needed: About 2 hours

The Training Covers: Child care and early childhood professionals are among those who are required to report suspected incidents of child abuse and neglect in the state of Oregon. This training will help you to learn the process for reporting incidents of child abuse or neglect.

Pediatric First Aid and CPR (FA/CPR)


Required For: All caregivers in licensed facilities

What is Required: A current Pediatric First Aid and CPR certificate

However, training must include in-person instructor-led practice and assessment to ensure the technique can be performed in an emergency.  Online only classes are not accepted.

Food Handlers Certificate

Required For: All staff in licensed facilities who prepare or serve food must have and maintain a current food handler certification. This includes:
    • Cooks and kitchen staff who handle food;
    • Staff who serve meals from a communal source or put away leftovers; and
    • Staff caring for infants who prepare bottles or serve food.

Format: Online, Free through the link below 

Time Needed: About 2 hours
The Training Covers:
    • How food can cause illness or allergic reactions. 
    • Preventing contamination of food and food-contact surfaces with the hands and body. 
    • Identifying which symptoms or illnesses must be reported to a manager. 
    • Using time and temperature control throughout the flow of making, serving, and storing food. 
    • Maintain a clean environment for food preparation and service.
After you pass the test, you’ll receive your food handlers certificate.



Foundations for Learning (FFL)

Description: This two-hour course is for educators and caregivers working with children ages 0-12. The early relationships children form with parents, teachers, and caregivers profoundly impacts their development on all levels: physical, cognitive, social, and emotional.

  • Provider (RS, RF, CF), Assistant I, Assistant II, Substitute Provider in RF & CF facilities.
  • Child Care Centers: All staff who count in staff to child ratios

Safe Sleep for Oregon’s Infants

Required for*: All caregivers in Home settings, and all staff in Centers that are licensed to care for infants. 

*If a Center is not licensed to care for children under 12 mo. old, the staff are not required to have taken Safe Sleep.
