Council Member Application

The Secretary of State’s Translation Advisory Council is recruiting members. We are seeking the following Council members to serve, at minimum, two years:

  1. At-large positions: At-large members bring lived experience and civic service in one or more of the respective communities served by voter pamphlet translation.
  2. Translator positions: Translator members bring lived experience and proficiency in English and one of the Council languages.

All applicants must be a resident of Oregon.

The Secretary of State is committed to an equitable and transparent application process, with an emphasis on ensuring the participation of diverse communities, including geographic diversity. If you are interested, please complete our application below. The application deadline has been extended to August 31, 2022 by 5 p.m. for applicants who have experience with Korean. Completion of this application does not confirm appointment to the Council.

You may begin and save an online application and return to complete it at any time before the deadline. We recommend gathering references and supplemental materials before applying.

Paper copies of the application are available upon request. Mailed materials must be received in our office by the deadline.

Optional Supplemental Application Materials

At large member applicants are not required to submit any supplemental materials.

Translator member applicants may provide proof of proficiency in reading and writing English and in one of the Council languages through supplemental materials including:

  1. A copy of the American Translator Association certificate/certification; or
  2. A copy of the Oregon Court Interpreter certificate/certification or equivalent; or
  3. A copy of the Oregon Healthcare Interpreter certificate/certification or equivalent; or
  4. A sample of translation work, providing both the English and translated texts; or
  5. A copy of a diploma or unofficial transcript for a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school in the United States of America or an international equivalent in a) one of the Council languages or English, or b) the study of linguistics, translation, interpretation, or related studies completed in English or one of the Council languages.
  6. Proof of volunteer experience translating for a non-profit organization, educational institution, social service agency, or public body.

All supplemental materials must be submitted as a PDF or Word document with the application.
