Career Opportunities
ODOT is actively involved in developing Oregon's system of highways and bridges, public transportation services, rail passenger and freight systems, and bicycle and pedestrian paths. There are currently employment opportunities for all levels of engineers ranging from high school student to registered Professional Engineer.   ODOT has a four level professional engineering series designed to develop staff into professional engineering experts in a variety of technical transportation‑related disciplines. Entry into the professional series requires classification as an Engineer Intern or Engineer-in-Training; or a degree that qualifies the applicant to take the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying (OSBEELS) Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Once employed, ODOT offers mentoring and training opportunities to meet the criteria for obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.

College Relations Program
ODOT’s College Relations program was implemented in 2007 to address the pending loss of skilled professionals due to the wave of expected retirements.  Since that time, ODOT has employed talented students and recent graduates, and created a national recruiting profile. As the awareness our programs grow, we want to make sure we are continuing to meet the needs of the agency by attracting the most qualified applicants for employment within the agency.
 
Our programs are competitive, national programs.  The preferred qualifications for applicants include:
  • being in good academic standing
  • enrollment in (or graduation from) an accredited program
  • recommendation from a faculty member 
For all of our hiring programs, applications are accepted only when vacancies are advertised.

Graduate Engineering Program
Our Graduate Engineering Program is an attractive option for up-and-coming engineers, who rotate through the disciplines for up to two years and receive mentorship from a registered Professional Engineer, which helps them meet requirements to become a licensed PE.  Participants are recognized as full-time employees, receiving a salary, a full benefits package, and mentorship from a registered PE while in the program.

College Internship Program
The College Internship Program is designed to allow students matriculating through an accredited post-secondary program the opportunity to gain practical experience.  Interns have a positive impact on the organization as ODOT faces the unique challenge of attracting and placing the “best and the brightest” as a projected 30 percent of current ODOT employees become retirement eligible in the next three years. Interns are hired as state temporary employees that may not exceed the equivalent of six calendar months (1040 hours) in a 12-month period.
 
Interns have a positive impact on the organization as ODOT faces the unique challenge of attracting and placing the “best and the brightest” as a projected 30 percent of current ODOT employees become retirement eligible in the next three years. Interns are hired as state temporary employees that may not exceed the equivalent of six calendar months (1040 hours) in a 12-month period.
 
Internships are available across the agency and can be advertised at any time during the year. For interested candidates, fill out the “Job Interest Card” on www.odotjobs.com and check the “Internship” category. You will receive an electronic notification once an announcement is posted.  Each announcement will have the minimum qualifications, preferred qualifications, location, and compensation for the incumbent.

High School Engineering Program
This program provides a paid apprenticeship experience to high achieving students. Participants explore career opportunities in transportation engineering and perform office, field, research or technical work.  Students must be in good academic standing with strong performance in math and science courses.
