The Oregon Department of Transportation, TriMet, City of Portland Bureau of Transportation, Portland Police Bureau, Portland Office of Neighborhood Involvement and the 82nd Avenue MAX Platform Working Group have collaborated on a project to improve pedestrian safety on N.E. 82nd Avenue (Highway 213) between N.E. Jonesmore Street and N.E. Wasco Street.
Pedestrians currently cross 82nd Avenue in the middle of the block using the raised median in the center of 82nd as a place to wait for traffic to clear. The Portland Police Bureau receives complaints on a regular basis about the behavior of both motorists and pedestrians in the area.
A multi-agency team formed with the goal of addressing orderliness which can contribute to real or perceived criminal activity and safety issues in the area. It was determined that constructing a median fence or a separator and making improvements to the bus shelter on 82nd Avenue were appropriate solutions. In addition, improvements will be made to the pedestrian signals and crosswalk at Jonesmore Street to encourage pedestrians to use the designated crosswalks.

| Median Treatment Design |

A local team of artists, Justin Gorman and Scott Pitek, designed an aesthetically pleasing median treatment. The artists collaborated with ODOT engineers, the City of Portland and TriMet to meet the technical requirements of the median treatment.
This past June the community participated in a design workshop and provided feedback on the median designs.
The median treatment will span approximately 300 feet in length and will reach 8.5 feet in height (including the pedestal and fence). At night, the treatment will illuminate a soft white light. The lighting, carefully designed by the artists and engineers, enhances the design and is a safety element for motorists and pedestrians.

Construction on the improvements at 82nd Avenue between Jonesmore Street and Wasco Street began late September. The $382,000 project includes:
- Constructing the median treatment
- Paving sections of 82nd Avenue near Jonesmore Street
- Improving the crosswalk at Jonesmore Street by widening the crosswalk to 10.5 feet wide to accommodate increased pedestrian volumes
- Moving the crosswalk at Jonesmore Street 14 feet to the south to shorten the distance pedestrians need to cross to reach the bus station
- Replace the pedestrian signals at Jonesmore Street with an audible countdown signals
- Replace the bus shelter on 82nd Avenue at Jonesmore Street
