Project location and overview The I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge Repair project will replace deck joints on the north end of the structure, mile post 25.61 to 27.18. The Glenn Jackson Bridge is co-owned by the states of Oregon and Washington, with Oregon responsible for maintenance of the structure.
The Glenn Jackson Bridge is a crucial link for commuters, freight and other traffic traveling the coastal corridor. Portland International Airport is located to the south of the bridge. There are approximately 140,000 vehicles a day that travel north and south across the bridge.
Project details
Twenty deck joints on the Interstate 205 Glenn Jackson Bridge north of Government Island over the Columbia River are in need of replacement. This project will replace these deck joints on both directions of I-205 at the north end of the bridge. (The deck joints on the south channel structure were repaired and replaced eight years ago.)
Traffic impacts ODOT plans to allow the contractor to close two lanes at a time in one direction of the I-205 Glenn Jackson Bridge for a maximum of 20 weekends (10 weekends each are anticipated for north and south I-205). The closures will begin at 10 p.m. on Friday and end at 5 a.m. on Monday morning. There also may be nighttime lane closures during weeknights for barrier movement, pavement striping, and mobilization.
Key dates
Bid let: May 2009
Construction: Fall 2009 - October 2010
To avoid the possibility of work simultaneously taking place at two key bridge locations on I-205, this project is being combined with a bridge joint replacement project on the I-205 George Abernethy Bridge. Work on the I-205 George Abernethy Bridge in Oregon City is under way. Click here for more information on that project. Once the contractor has completed work on the Abernethy Bridge, it will begin on the Glenn Jackson Bridge.
