US26 Jefferson Street Rockfall Repair
January 27, 2014
Update:  This project is complete.
There will be no more closures of the Jefferson Street on-ramp to US 26.
Thank you for your patience during this project.
Project Purpose and Need
The Jefferson Street on-ramp to the Sunset Highway (US 26) westbound frequently experiences minor and occasionally major rockfalls.  This poses a hazard to the traveling public on the ramp and on US 26.   To reduce the rockfall hazard, an ODOT contractor will clear vegetation and some trees from the rock slope, remove loose rock and install steel mesh protection.
Replanting of woody shrubs and grasses will occur on the flatter areas of the slope.  Over time the plantings will restore the “green” look of the slope.
Saturday Closures: The additional weekday and Saturday work days in December and January are needed for timely completion of this complex project.  We apologize for the inconvenience.
Upcoming work: With the rock removal complete, the drilling work to install rock bolts, which hold the mesh screen in place, will continue until approximately Dec.  18th. The mesh screen installation will occur after the drilling is complete along with planting the top of the slopes.
The project will generate noise when there is drilling and rock removal.  The noise will occur during the daytime.  To report noise problems for construction incidents requiring immediate attention 24 hours/day, call 503-412-2350.
During the ramp closure, travelers heading to the Sunset Highway westbound will be detoured from Jefferson Street to SW 13th Avenue, to the Clay Street entrance. The detour route will be signed.
Traffic Impacts to the local area
During construction, there will be full closures of the ramp weekday and weekend.  To complete the work, while minimizing traffic impacts, ramp closures will occur during the daytime to avoid commute hours.  Intermittent evening ramp closures may also occur.  Motorists should expect some delays.  There will be no work on major holidays.
