The purpose of the Sunrise Jobs and Transportation Act (JTA) Project is to address congestion and safety problems in the OR 212/224 corridor by building a new 2.5 mile road from I-205 to 122nd Avenue and improving local roadway connections to the Lawnfield Industrial District. When completed, the project will reduce congestion, increase safety, and enhance economic development opportunities and freight mobility. It is the first phase of the larger Sunrise Corridor Preferred Alternative.
The Sunrise Corridor is an essential freight route from I-5 and I-205 to U.S. 26 and central and eastern Oregon. In addition, the Clackamas Industrial Area is home to one of the state’s busiest and most critical freight distribution centers. The Oregon 212/224 corridor is not capable of handling the expected increase in traffic resulting from significant community development and industrial expansion in the corridor.
After years of public involvement, community participation and environmental studies, the Federal Highway Administration signed the Record of Decision that approved the $1.4 billion Sunrise Corridor Preferred Alternative, a new highway as many as eight lanes wide from I-205 at the Milwaukie Expressway to SE 162nd Avenue. Although there is currently no funding for the full project, the Oregon Legislature approved $100 million through the Oregon Jobs and Transportation Act (JTA) to fund the first phase of the project completed in 2016.
Construction started in July 2013 and was completed in July 2016:
- A new four-lane highway (two lanes each direction) from the Milwaukie Expressway (OR 224) at I-205 to SE 122nd Avenue at OR 212/224. It is 2.5 miles in length.
- A new I-205 overcrossing to connect 82nd Drive and 82nd Avenue.
- Bicycle and pedestrian connections and improvements in the area.
- Intersection improvements at SE 122nd Avenue and OR 212/224.
- Other improvements, including traffic signals, signing, striping, drainage and water quality.
