Old Siskiyou Highway - Steinman and Dollarhide Bridge & OR 66 Neil Creek Bridge
Project Information
Dollarhide Bridge is closed. Steinman Bridge is open and work is nearly complete. Neil Creek Bridge project is underway.

Three bridges in south Jackson County will be under construction this summer, the historic Steinman and Dollarhide bridges on Old Siskiyou Highway (Oregon 272) and the Neil Creek Bridge on Greensprings Highway (Oregon 66).

The Neil Creek bridge project will replace the existing structure and is separate from the Dollarhide Steinman rehabilitation project.

What’s the Problem?
The aging historic bridges are in need of structural and safety repairs.

What does ODOT plan to do?

In the spring and summer of 2011, ODOT’s contractor will rehabilitate two historic bridges on Old Siskiyou Highway (Oregon 273).

Key Features
This work will include the following:
  • Replace bridge rails
  • Clean and repair cracked walls and spalled girders
  • Remove and replace road deck
  • Rehabilitate existing historic rock wall

What kind of construction impacts can I expect?
Most of this work will be done with flaggers performing traffic control. There will be up to a six week closure of each bridge (one bridge at a time) because of the needed structural work for each bridge. Again, only one bridge at a time will be closed, beginning with the lower (Steinman) bridge.
Signing will be placed alerting users of each closure several weeks in advance. You may also sign up for email alerts at the address below.

/ODOT/HWY/REGION3/PublishingImages/steinman_thumb.jpgWhy are these bridges historic?
These are the first two bridges built by ODOT following its creation in 1913. And they are still in service! They were constructed in 1914 as part of the old Pacific Highway. The railing design on Steinman is similar to four structures on the historic Columbia River Highway, also built in 1914. The bridge is the only known switchback on Oregon’s highway system where the roadway passes both under and over the structure.

Neil Creek Bridge

The Neil Creek bridge, first built in 1920, will be replaced with a wider structure to accommodate both vehicle and bicycle traffic. During construction, a single lane will be open for traffic controlled by a traffic signal for both directions of traffic, and an adjacent driveway.
The new bridge will be 44 feet in width and have two, 12 foot travel lanes and shoulders will meet current standards.
Like Dollarhide and Steinman, construction on this bridge is expected to last a single season.
