Why this project is needed and what is being done
OR 140 in the Warner Curve Mile Post 21 project area looking east.
OR 140 in the project area looking east.
OR 140 is an important part of the State’s transportation system in south central Oregon.  This is a major truck route for freight from the Oregon coast to Nevada.  Keeping roads in good condition and providing for safe travel are critical parts of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s mission.

The curve at Milepost 20.8 to 21.23 is uncharacteristically sharp for this section of OR 140 and has narrow shoulders.  Even with the current posted speed of 30 mph, there have been a number of crashes in the area including fatalities in 1988 and 2001.  The sharpness of the curve and excessive travel speeds seem to be common elements in the crashes.  In addition, this is one of a number of sharp curves that limit the length of trucks that can use this portion of OR 140.  The long-term goal is to correct these sharp curves so the length restriction can be removed.

This project will straighten the curve by cutting into the slope on the south side of the existing roadway.   Standard five foot shoulders will be constructed.  Guardrails and signing will be upgraded to meet current standards.

As part of this project, the culvert on Parsnip Creek will be replaced.  The current culvert restricts fish passage and will be replaced with a box culvert that will enhance fish movement.
