Redmond: U.S. 97 Reroute Open House
Public invited to comment on proposal to relocate access to Larch Street
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) invites the public to an open house to learn about and comment on a proposed change in highway-to-city street access points on the future US 97 Reroute. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 7, 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m., in the conference room at the Redmond Public Library. The Redmond Public Library is located at 827 SW Deschutes Avenue in Redmond.
ODOT traffic engineers are recommending that the southbound US 97 right-in/right-out connection currently planned at Hemlock Avenue and US 97 be moved northward to Larch Street and US 97. The northbound right-in/right-out connection at Hemlock Avenue and US 97 would remain in the current, proposed location.
Relocating the southbound highway connection from Hemlock Avenue to Larch Street will provide a reduction in the project's construction complexity and cost while providing for enhanced local traffic circulation and better emergency vehicle access to the nearby hospital.
ODOT staff will be available during the Open House to discuss issues and answer questions related to the proposed access changes.
About the US 97 Redmond Reroute
The US 97 Redmond Reroute project plans for a limited number of direct connections between the highway and the City’s street system. Traffic signals are planned for the intersection of US 97 and OR 126 (Highland Avenue and Evergreen Avenue). Additionally, two right-in/right-out connections are proposed including the aforementioned configuration at Hemlock Avenue and Larch Streets as well as at Antler Avenue.
Once complete, the new north-south US 97 Reroute alignment will run between the Central Oregon Irrigation Districts Pilot Butte canal and BNSF railroad on the east side of town from just north of Veterans way on the south end, to just south of the O’Neil Highway junction on the north end.
The project will increase north/south highway capacity and reduce congestion and travel delays on the 5th/6th Street couplet in downtown Redmond, minimize the number of heavy trucks using the couplet and improve the business climate and general livability of the City’s downtown core. Additionally, the new alignment will improve freight mobility and freight access to future industrial developments in Redmond.
