Public Invited to Celebrate the Future of Transportation in Redmond
The Oregon Department of Transportation and city of Redmond invite community members to join us on Thursday, Oct. 12 as we mark major milestones for transportation in Redmond. The ceremony will start at 3 p.m. in Bowlby Park, with Rep. Greg Walden as keynote speaker and Mayor Alan Unger as master-of-ceremony.
Work is wrapping up on the Glacier-Highland Couplet (OR 126) and the Maple-Negus Bridge, with the contract advertisement for the US 97 Redmond Reroute mainline project released this month. In addition, the city’s Maple Bridge will be finished this fall.
Community members are encouraged to attend the event and learn about the collaboration between local, state and federal agencies to fund and construct the projects. Members of the project teams will be available to answer questions about the project and refreshments will be served.
Directions to Bowlby Park:
From US 97, turn west on Glacier Avenue (OR 126), continue west past merge of the one-way back onto Highland Avenue, turn left on SW 17th Street, turn right on SW Juniper Avenue, and turn right into designated parking area. Walk from parking across SW Canyon Drive and follow signs to pedestrian undercrossing of Highland Avenue into Bowlby Park.
From Sisters on OR 126 (Highland Avenue), go past the traffic signal at Rimrock Way (Rays shopping center), turn right on SW 17th Street, turn right on SW Juniper Avenue, and turn right into designated parking area. Walk from parking across SW Canyon Drive and follow signs to pedestrian undercrossing of Highland Avenue into Bowlby Park.
About the Projects:
US 97 Redmond Reroute: Once complete, the new US 97 Reroute will increase the north/south highway capacity and reduce congestion and travel delays on Fifth and Sixth streets in downtown Redmond.
Several parts of the project have been completed, including the piping of one and one-half miles of COID main canal, the construction of NW Seventh, NE Second and NE Ninth streets, the relocation of the PPL main power substation. Currently, crews are working to build the Maple-Negus Bridge, which will span N. Canal Boulevard, the canal, the reroute and the railroad. The bridge, which is scheduled to be finished this fall, will meet up with the city of Redmond’s Maple Bridge to create a major east-west arterial.
Construction of the mainline is scheduled to start in spring 2007 and the entire project, including an interchange at the north end, is estimated to be finished in late 2008.
OR 126 Glacier-Highland Couplet: The purpose of the Glacier-Highland Couplet project is to alleviate congestion along Highland Avenue and add safety facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists. Improvements include a pedestrian undercrossing beneath the highway, new sidewalks, ornamental lighting, and landscaping. The project will be complete this fall. In order to add capacity, Highland Avenue is now one-way eastbound and Glacier Avenue is one-way westbound. In addition, Ninth Street is for northbound traffic and 11th Street is for southbound traffic.
