Central Oregon Road Construction
UPDATE: Week of October 17th
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is continuing to invest in Oregon’s future with roadway improvement projects throughout Oregon’s central region (ODOT Region 4). ODOT is committed to providing safe, efficient transportations systems. The following projects reflect ODOT’s commitment to make improvements as traffic numbers rise and to make the roadways safer and more efficient for drivers:
CROOK COUNTY
OR 26 (Ochoco Highway), MP 20-34, Laughlin Road to Marks Creek, east of Prineville
Crews will be working performing cleanup work and sign installation. Minimal delays are possible.
Shoulder work and culvert replacement will also take place in the construction area. This is a preservation project designed to extend the life of the existing pavement and to improve drainage, safety, and signing.
DESCHUTES COUNTY
OR 126 (McKenzie Highway), MP 111, Redmond
The intersection of Highland and Rimrock avenues has been paved and striped. Traffic is moving in two westbound lanes, one eastbound lane, and a center turn lane at the intersection. The new traffic signal has been turned on.
Rails are being installed on the north side of Highland Avenue, above the pedestrian under-crossing. Slope paving is nearly complete at the pedestrian tunnel. Sod is scheduled to be installed in the portion of the Dry Canyon area to the north of Highland Avenue. The area was reshaped for the storm water settlement basin. The footpath entering into the tunnel from the north will be paved to where it connects with the existing paved path.
Glacier Avenue, Redmond
Glacier Avenue, between Sixth and Ninth streets, is scheduled to be open to through traffic. Ninth Street, from Highland to Forest avenues, will be open to only northbound traffic, while work continues on city utilities in the area. Additionally, Ninth Street will be closed between Forest and Highland Avenues.
Sidewalk work will continue along both sides of Glacier, between Sixth and Ninth streets. There may be intermittent one-block closures along Glacier in this section.
US 20/OR 126/OR 242, Sisters
Crews will work during the day and night to stripe the recently paved highway sections. Work will take place on OR 242 near Sisters, and on OR 126 from Locust Street to the intersection of US 20. Expect delays of less than 10 minutes.
US 20 (McKenzie-Bend Highway), MP 15-18, Tumalo to Bend
Day and night work will take place during the week as crews strip the recently paved highway. Electricians will work at night on the signal at the intersection of US 20 and Robal Road. Expect delays of less than 10 minutes.
US 20 (Greenwood Avenue), MP 0.51 To 1.11, Bend
Day and night work will take place during the week on Greenwood Avenue, from Third to 11th streets, as crews strip the recently paved highway. Night work on the signals at the intersections of Greenwood Avenue with Third Street and Eighth Street is also scheduled. Expect delays of less than 10 minutes.
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 113.9, north of Terrebonne
Southbound traffic has been switched to the new bridge structure. Crews are preparing to pave the northbound lane next week, weather permitting. Northbound traffic is scheduled to be switched to the new structure on Monday, Oct. 24, following paving operations.
Final paving is planned for either the week of October 31 or November 7, weather permitting. Motorists should expect a single lane closure while crews perform paving operations. Flaggers will control the alternating one-way traffic and access to 10th street during the paving operations. Work will occur from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wimp Way at US 97 in Terrebonne is temporarily closed to through traffic to facilitate replacement of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad Bridge and to ensure motorist safety during construction at this intersection.
This bridge is located about one mile north of Terrebonne on US 97 at milepost 113.9. During the first phase of construction, crews will construct a new, two-lane bridge with 10-foot shoulders to the west of the existing bridge. Traffic will remain on the existing bridge during construction. Motorists will be routed to the new bridge in fall 2005. Following this traffic switch, crews will remove the existing bridge.
Negus Way, Redmond
Negus Way is closed between North Canal Boulevard and NE 5th St. Crews from Hap Taylor and Sons Construction will return to the area this fall to begin work to build the Maple-Negus Bridge.
Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes around the closure area, including the usage of the newly completed NE 9th Street extension location between Negus Avenue and Hemlock Avenue. Patrons of Xtreme Fitness will use the newly completed NE 2nd Street bridge to reach the business.
GILLIAM COUNTY
OR 19, MP 15 – MP 17, North of Condon
Contractors will cleanup work this week at the Olex Highway Improvement Project. A traffic shift is located before the new bridge. Expect minimal delays. The posted construction speed is 25 mph in this work zone.
The Olex Highway Improvement Project replaces a failing 82-year-old bridge that is often impassable due to flooding waters, straightens out a hairpin curve and widens portions of Oregon Highway 19 (John Day Highway).
The existing roadway is steep and narrow with several sharp curves and limited sight distance resulting in restricted freight access to the area. The realignment of the highway in this area will increase the trucking industry’s ability to transport goods and services to Gilliam County and the community of Condon from the I-84 corridor.
JEFFERSON COUNTY
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 92 and US 26 (Warm Springs Highway), MP 116, Madras
Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on US 26 between the Willow Creek Bridge and N.W. Plum Street to allow for curb and medium work in the area. Expect intermittent minor delays.
Crews will are working in the vicinity of US 26, US 97, Poplar, Maple, Oak, Fourth and Sixth streets. Motorists are advised to slow down and be aware of increase construction related traffic when traveling through this construction zone.
The US 97/US 26 Willow Creek Bridge - Depot Road Project will reconfigure and signalize the intersection of US 97 and US 26 near the north city limits of Madras. This project provides safety and enhancement improvements in the City of Madras on US 26 / US 97 from the existing Willow Creek Bridges (MP 92.12) to the intersection of N.E. Plum Street (MP 91.84) and pavement improvements on U.S. 26 between N.E. Plum Street and N.E. Depot Street (MP 116.80).
US 26 (Warm Springs Highway), MP 116.36 – 116.80, West of Madras
Wildish Standard Paving Company is working to replace the existing, three lane Burlington Northern Santa Fe Rail Road Bridge, west of Madras, with a new, wider, three-lane Bridge. Traffic has been switched to a temporary bridge structure. Motorists will remain on the detour during the construction period as crews work to build the new structure.
Crews anticipate performing the final concrete deck installation work on the new bridge during the week of Oct. 24. They plan to pave the surface in early November. Motorists will be switched to the new structure once paving work is complete. Embankment work continues in the area.
Construction activities will take place in the area Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible. Motorists can expect delays of less than 15 minutes when traveling through this work zone. This project is expected to be complete in late 2005.
KLAMATH COUNTY
Tingley Lane (Midland Highway), MP 1.34, Klamath Falls
The Tingley Lane Bridge over the Lost River diversion canal is scheduled to be closed to traffic beginning Wednesday, Oct. 19. During this four-month closure, the contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation will replace the current aging, wood structure with a concrete bridge.
The bridge was closed in summer 2004 after damage was discovered in the bridge deck. It was opened later that year, but restricted to one lane, with a stop sign at each end. The new structure will be a two-span concrete slap bridge, 36 feet wide and 125 feet long. It will be able to handle modern-day loads and truck traffic.
Signs will be in place to alert travelers of the closure and suggest possible detour routes.
OR 66 (Greensprings Highway) MP 43.48-44.08, west of Klamath Falls
Crews will prepare for work on the Spencer Bridge over the Klamath River. No delays anticipated.
US 97 (The Dalles-California Highway), MP 183, North of Gilchrist
Crews will perform final roadway work on Monday, Oct, 17 and Tuesday Oct 18. Flaggers will control alternating one-way traffic. Motorists should expect delays of nine minutes or less. Work will take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This will complete the work at this project site.
US 97 (Dalles - California Highway), MP 200.3 - 202.3, North of Chemult
Road crews will return to perform final work on the passing lanes in mid October, with no impact to traffic. Work will occur from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
US 97 (Dalles-California Highway), MP 201.64-202.34, North of Chemult
Motorists should expect a single lane closure through Oct. 19 while crews complete work on the new UPRR Bridge. Flaggers will control the alternating one-way traffic 24 hours a day during roadway operations until northbound and southbound traffic is switched to the new bridge the week of October 17.
Crews will then perform final roadway work following the traffic switch. Motorists should expect intermittent lane closures with flaggers directing motorist’s movements. Work will take place 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. with intermittent night and weekend work possible.
US 97, (Dalles – California Highway), MP 240.55 to MP 267.08 Spring Creek Hill to North Shady Pine Road Bridge Work, North of Klamath Falls
Contractors working for the Oregon Department of Transportation will perform bridgework between the Spring Creek Hill and North Shady Pine Road this week, weather permitting. Motorists can expect up to 20-minute delays. Traffic will be controlled by flaggers as needed.
Crews are working to repair or replace the Spring Creek Bridge (US 97, MP 244), North Chiloquin Interchange Bridge (US 97, MP 247.54), Barkley Springs Irrigation Canal Bridge (US 97, MP 263.11), and Algoma Log Pond Bridge (US 97, MP 265.65).
The south end of Algoma Road was closed at Highway 97, starting July 15, to facilitate the replacement of the Algoma Bridge. This closure expected to be in place until December.
US 97 (The Dalles-California Highway), MP 270 to 273 & OR 39 (Crater Lake Parkway), MP -7 to -3, Klamath Falls
A project to install striping along US 97 and OR 39 in Klamath Falls began Monday, Sept. 19 and will continue for several weeks. The work area is US 97, from Cove Point Road to the junction of OR 39. It will continue south on OR 39 (Crater Lake Parkway) to South Sixth Street.
Crews will work from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. When working in the section of OR 39, from Portland to Main streets, pavement grinding will be limit to the hours between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. The work on US 97 will require flaggers and pilot cars. Motorists should expect minimal delays.
The inlaid tape will replace the aging painted pavement markings on the highways. The tape should last five to seven years and eliminate the need for annual retracing. The tape is laid flush with the highway surface in order to protect it from snow plow damage.
US 97 (The Dalles – California Highway), MP 274.73, Klamath Falls
Traffic is reduced to one lane through the U.S. 97 California Avenue Bridge (MP 274.7) project.
Contractor crews are performing road work and paving in the area. The temporary traffic signal will be turned off during the hours of 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Flaggers will control traffic. Expect minimal delays.
California Avenue is currently closed to through traffic between North 1st Street and Conger Avenue to facilitate construction of the new bridge. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes around the area. Additionally, Klamath Basin Transit will reroute bus service around the work area and temporarily remove two bus stops on California Avenue between North 1st Street and Conger Avenue during the road closure.
US 97 (Dalles - California Highway), MP 275.8, Klamath Falls
Crews from Hamilton Construction Company are working to replace the US 97 Bridge over Greensprings Drive. The construction speed of 45 miles per hour is strictly enforced. No delays expected.
OR 140 Jct. OR 39/OR 140 Hwy. – Ritter Road, OR 140 (Klamath Falls- Lakeview Highway) MP 5.51 to 25.17
Crews may be in the area performing some clean-up work. Work should not affect traffic.
OR 140 (Lake of the Woods Highway), MP 50.81 to MP 57.06, at Doak Mountain, West of Klamath Falls
Contractor crews will be performing paving and shoulder work on OR 140 at Doak Mountain. Flaggers will be providing traffic control when needed. Expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
LAKE COUNTY
OR 140 (Warner Highway) MP 17.39 – 18.50, US 395 (Freemont Highway) MP 128.57 – 142.64
Contractor crews are striping and installing signs on US 395, between mile points 128 – 143, north of Lakeview. Expect less than 10-minute delays.
Contractor crews are working on a drainage box culvert at mile post 18.2. on OR 140, east of Lakeview. No delays anticipated.
This modernization project will realign and reconstruct Highway 140 to eliminate four curves, install safety features and replace the Parsnip Creek Bridge (MP 18.2) with a box culvert on the Warner Highway. Along, US 395, contractor crews will add two to three inches of new pavement on the Freemont Highway, north of Lakeview. This paving project will improve the aging highway surface in the area and includes upgrades to guardrail and constructing new mailbox turnouts. The project is anticipated to be finished in summer 2006.
WASCO COUNTY
I-84, (Historic Columbia River) MP 84, The Dalles
Cleanup work will take place in the area. Minimal delays are possible.
US 197 (The Dalles-California Highway), MP 0.0 - 0.5, Between Oregon and Washington states
Contractor crews working for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) are working to replace the bridge deck surface on the US 197 The Dalles Bridge. This work is expected to take three days to complete, weather permitting.
Crews will work from midnight to 6 p.m., Mondays to Thursdays and midnight to 3 p.m. on Fridays, through mid-November.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane across the bridge and controlled by flaggers during these working hours. Delays of less than 10 minutes are anticipated.
