In the last 24 hours, Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) dispatchers have received numerous reports of motorists colliding with snowplows because of impatient, illegal passing maneuvers. With continuing snow accumulations forecasted for areas east of the Cascades in the days to come and the likelihood of increased snowplow activity in the area, ODOT reminds motorists that passing snowplows on the right is illegal, dangerous and punishable by a $237 fine.
When approaching a snowplow, Rick Williams, ODOT Assistant District Manager recommends that motorists be patient and avoid passing the plow on the right. “The snowplow driver will pull over periodically to let traffic pass more safely. When drivers attempt to pass on the right they may encounter fast moving, flying snow and debris that is being removed from the highway and blown to the shoulder.” In addition to damaging your vehicle, Williams says that the flying snow can temporarily impair a driver’s vision causing them to lose control and cause a crash with another motorist on the roadway.
ODOT reminds drivers:
· Keep a safe distance behind the snowplow and give yourself extra stopping distance;
· Snowplows may be applying sand to the roadway. Following too closely as sand is released on the roadway may result in damage to auto paint and windshields;
· Stay behind snowplows because the road behind the snowplow is likely in much better condition than the road ahead;
· Use extra care when trying to accelerate and pass vehicles in winter weather conditions;
Williams says that ODOT has teamed up with state and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that motorists comply with the law. “They will be stepping up enforcement in the days to come, it’s really just a matter of keeping people safe,” said Williams.
