I-84: Eastbound and Westbound Bridges Over UP Railroad (Rufus)
Latest News
Bridge project to begin the week of August 23
Wildish Standard Paving Company is working to overlay the bridge deck at MP 109 with a premixed polymer concrete on both eastbound and westbound lanes.  The work is to be completed by September 20, 2010.
Lane closures will be needed to complete the work.  Single lane closures will occur between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. Sunday thru Thursday night.  A detour for wide loads will be in effect during the lane closure time period.
There will be minimal delays to the traveling public.

Project Information
The project area is located on Interstate 84 approximately ½ mile west of Rufus, Oregon.  The two bridges span the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Why this Project is Needed
Interstate 84 is a critical part of the State’s transportation system and is a major east-west corridor for the western United States.  Keeping highways in good condition and providing a safe, efficient transportation system that supports economic opportunity are critical parts of the mission for the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
The two concrete bridges were built in 1965 and each is approximately 450 feet long.  The bridge decks are in poor condition with pot holes and heavy surface cracking.  A temporary seal was placed on the bridges in 2004 to prolong the life of the deck until a longer term solution was developed.

What is Being Proposed
This project will install a concrete overlay on the bridge decks.  The surface cracking and potholes will be repaired before placement of the overlay.
It’s estimated the repair work will take two to three weeks to complete.  Work will be done at night to reduce impacts to the traveling public.

Traffic Control during Construction
There will be single lane closures weekdays from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., leaving one lane for travel in each direction.  During those hours, oversized loads will be required to detour around the construction site using old highway US 30 between Rufus and Biggs Junction.  Advanced signing will direct all wide loads to this detour.  All bridge lanes will be open during the day.
