I-84: Rufus - Swanson Canyon
Project completed in 2010
The $9.2 million I-84 Rufus to Swanson Canyon contract was awarded to Oregon Mainline Paving in April 2010 and was completed by the end of October 2010.

The project is located east of Rufus, Oregon between MP 110.46 and MP 125.56.  Both the eastbound and westbound lanes will be paved in this 15 mile strech of Interstate 84 during the summer of 2010.
The westbound slow lane, or right lane, from MP 141.5 to 147 will also be paved.

Why is this project needed?
Interstate 84 is a critical part of the State’s transportation system and is a major east-west corridor for the Western United States.  Keeping the roads in good condition and providing a safe, efficient transportation system that supports economic opportunity is a critical aspect of the Oregon Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) mission.
The existing asphalt in this 15 mile stretch of I-84 has reached its design life.  The last pavement rehabilitation work on this section was in 1994.  The existing roadway is showing signs of rutting, and an excessive amount of oil rising to the surface.  This is a prime indicator of stripping, which occurs when the rock loses cohesiveness with the oil.
Signs installed in the late 1980’s no longer meet current safety and quality standards.

How does ODOT propose to solve these problems?
ODOT is planning on grinding out the top 3” of slow lane pavement and repaving with 3” of dense hot mix asphalt.  The fast lane will have 5” of pavement removed and replaced.
Existing signs will be replaced and brought up to current standards.

Traffic control during construction
Single lane closures will be necessary during paving operations but will be limited to the night time.  Some work along the shoulders is planned during day light hours but will not require lane closures.
