OR 140: Drews Creek Fish Passage
Project Components and Location
  • Replace a 60” x 130’ culvert with a new 17’ x 11’ arched pipe that will allow for fish passage in Drews Creek.
  • Remove a concrete box culvert on the old OR 140 alignment and reestablish the natural stream channel.
The Project is located approximately 25 miles west of Lakeview in Lake County, Oregon on OR 140.

This project is part of a large restoration effort in the Drews Creek Watershed.  The Drews Valley Ranch, downstream from the site, recently entered a conservation easement program.  As a part of this plan, the Forest Service, the Oregon Department of Transportation and the ranch owners, Jack and Beverly Sparrowk, are working together to restore connectivity from Drews Reservoir to its headwaters.
The project will replace a 60" x 130’ culvert located at mile point 71.73 under highway OR 140 with a new structure (arched piped) more suitable for fish passage.  The downstream end of the existing culvert sits about a foot above the water surface making it difficult for fish to move upstream.  The arched piped will be embedded in the new stream channel and natural material will be added to the floor of the pipe to create a more natural stream bed. 
The existing culvert will be left in place for temporary water management during construction and for small mammal passage after the arched piped is installed.
In addition, a reinforced concrete box culvert and embankment upstream from the highway on the old highway alignment will be removed.  The original stream channel will be reestablished.

Traffic control during construction
A one-lane detour will be constructed adjacent to the existing roadway.  Single-lane traffic will be controlled by flaggers 24 hours a day on either end of the detour.  The detour is expected to be in place from August through October, 2008.  Motorists should plan on 10-20 minutes delays.
Due to the 14’ detour lane width, no wide loads will be allowed.
