US 97: SPRING CREEK HILL to NORTH SHADY PINE ROAD
PROJECT FACT SHEET
This 17-mile project is located on US97. The Southern project limit is located approximately 5 miles North of the city of Klamath Falls at milepost 267.08 (Modoc Point). The North project limit is located at milepost 241 (Top of Spring Creek Hill). In addition to paving, there will be road widening for a left turn lane from milepost 243 to 244 (Collier Logging Museum and State Park) and from milepost 263 to 264 (Hagelstein Park). Spring Creek Bridge (MP 244), North Chiloquin Interchange (MP 247.54), Barkley Springs Irrigation Canal Bridge (MP 263.11), and Algoma Log Pond Bridge (MP 265.65) will need to be replaced as part of ODOT’s OTIA III, Stage 1, Cracked Bridge Strategy. From milepost 241 to 242 and from milepost 258 to 267, the rockfall areas will be cut back to allow for fall out area and shoulder widening. Included in this project is paving the Chiloquin Highway from the North Chiloquin Interchange to the Williamson River Bridge.
The four bridges listed above need to be replaced to handle weight table 5 loads before May 2005. The US97 corridor will be used to detour heavy and wide truck traffic from I5 while the I5 bridges are replaced.
On this section of highway the pavement has a considerable amount of pavement distress that suggests structural and material problems. Some of these problems can be attributed to base failure and pavement stripping. Base failure is also occurring at the approaches to the bridge structures. There is evidence of subsidence of the embankment in the outside lanes and shoulders.
Hwy 97 M.P.241-243 & M.P.258-267; Hazardous rock falls areas have been identified.
Hwy 422:The pavement in this section of highway is in fair condition; it is starting to show signs of fatigue along with some cracking.
Opportunities for Involvement
Public communications: ODOT will send out news releases through newspapers and radio.
Information During Construction:
Traffic restrictions and/or road and lane closure dates will be communicated through news releases.
Restrict traffic to one lane temporary through paving and rockfall construction zones.
Construct bridges in stages to shorten traffic delays.
Construct road widening with little impact to traveling public.
Construction contract is awarded – October 2004.
Contractor begins construction in December
All bridges meet weight table five and 32 feet in width by May, 2005.
Paving, Bridges, Rockfall, & Widening complete.
All construction substantially complete 2006/2007.
