US97 RILEY BRIDGE
PROJECT FACT SHEET

Project Location:
Riley Bridge is located on US97 Business at MP135.05 in the city of Bend, Deschutes County.

Purpose of the project:
The existing bridge spans a segment of a Swalley Irrigation canal.  The bridge needs to be replaced because of deteriorating masonry block abutments.  The solution is to replace the bridge with a pipe.

Traffic changes during the project:
ODOT has proposed to remove the bridge and portions of the abutments and to pipe the canal.  To facilitate the construction work, a detour that would reroute southbound traffic on US97 to Robal Road, to US20, back to US97 Business (3rd Street).  Southbound US97 through traffic would still have access to US97 (Parkway).  By allowing this detour, the bridge can be removed and replaced with a pipe in shorter amount of time rather than stage the construction under traffic.  The detour results in safer traffic operations (no traffic in the construction work zone) with minor impacts to the traveling public (faster construction schedule).

Information during Construction:
A public construction kickoff meeting will be scheduled once a Contractor is selected and the final construction schedule is complete.  Road and lane closure dates and durations will be posted on variable message boards along the US97 and US20 and broadcasted over the radio.

Detour signs will be posted to redirect traffic around the construction area.  Construction status reports will be posted on the ODOT website.

The construction of the project must be completed between October 2004 and April 2005 because the canal water will be shut down.

Key project milestones:
  • Let the project - July 2004.
