Why this project is important
These two Spanish Hollow Creek Bridges are located on U.S. 97, which is a designated freight route. It is important to repair the decks on these bridges in order to maintain and protect these assets. If the bridge deck repairs are postponed, then the condition of the bridges will continue to deteriorate. Subsequent repairs will be more expensive and with greater impacts to overall transportation.
Both bridges (08895 and 08896) have chipping and flaking of the concrete surface, called spauling, several inches deep. The spauling has exposed rebar and the concrete is extremely deteriorated in isolated areas. In addition, bridge 08896 has some structural problems that do not allow permitting of all truck loads
What ODOT plans to do The areas with the chipping and flaking will be removed, and repaired with new concrete. The deck will then be coated with a protective concrete wearing surface. One of the cross beams on bridge 08896 will be strengthened to allow for all truck loads.
Traffic control during construction Travel will be restricted to one lane through the construction zone, which encompasses both bridges. Traffic will be controlled by 24-hour flagging. Motorists should expect delays up to 10 minutes.
