I-84 Paving Project: Multnomah Falls to Cascade Locks

Project Information
The I-84: Multnomah Falls to Cascade Locks project included grinding out existing pavement and adding a new in-lay of two to four inches across the project area. Several off/on-ramps to I-84 also were paved along the corridor. New guardrail and median barrier were added to some parts of the corridor.

This 14-mile project begins at mile post 31.8, just east of Multnomah Falls, and ends at mile post 46.1, east of Cascade Locks. Work was substantially completed in 2010. Some additional paving and striping work will take place in spring or summer 2011. Please check this website or http://www.tripcheck.com, or call 5-1-1 for the latest construction update.

Project Need
The surface area of I-84 in the project area was in need of repairs. Several areas had been temporarily patched. Interchange ramps, crossing roadways and frontage roads also were in need of improvement. This is a major national route for east-west interstate traffic. The current average daily traffic volume is 20,800 vehicles.
Construction Impacts
Work requiring lane closures on the highway can take place during the day (weekdays only) and during the night (weekdays and weekends). Due to the paving and barrier work, it is necessary to occasionally move traffic to the shoulders during some stages of the project. During some paving operations, it is necessary to close ramp access to and from I-84. Detours will be in place during the temporary ramp closures, which are only expected to last a night or two at a time.

Read the weekly construction news, which details construction impacts on this project updated every Friday.
Motorists should expect delays of 30 minutes or more during daytime grinding and paving operations.
Paving operations started in late July 2010 and continued through September. Most of the project work was completed during this period. However, some remaining paving and striping on I-84 and ramps will take place in spring or summer 2011.
In addition to lane closures, temporary ramp closures also will be required (nighttime only). Detours will direct motorists to the next exit and back when the ramp closures are in effect.
There will be no daytime lane closures Friday afternoon through the weekend during this project.
Project Timeline
Construction on the I-84: Multnomah Falls to Cascade Locks project began in March 2010. Work was substantially completed in October 2010. However, expect lane closures and temporary ramp closures in spring or summer 2011 for some final paving and striping work.
**If you click on this project area map link, you'll notice that there are a couple of "No Work" areas designated on the map. Pavement restoration in these two areas was not handled by the contractor on this project (Knife River Corp. Northwest of Tangent, Ore.). Rather, pavement rehab and bridge work in these areas will be done by a separate contractor as part of the OTIA Bridge program.
