VA Benefits Information

Are you a veteran? If so, did you know that you may be eligible to receive your GI Bill benefits while participating in an OJT or Apprenticeship program?

Apprenticeship and OJT programs both offer a great opportunity to earn wages while learning and pave the way for a new career after leaving the military.

*Starting October 1st, 2016 the DVA is not contracting with BOLI for the purpose of facilitating veteran's within OJT and Apprenticeship Programs.*

What is Apprenticeship Training?

Apprenticeship training programs in Oregon consist of supervised on-the-job construction training that is coupled with related classroom instruction. Program duration is generally two to five years in length and requires a minimum of 144 hours a year of related training outside of the construction site.

What is On the Job Training (OJT?)

An OJT program differs from an apprenticeship program, as it is not limited to the construction trades and does not have a related instruction requirement.

Currently, the Division has a number of programs in law enforcement and various private businesses.

If your place of business or employment is not a currently approved OJT program, they may be able to be approved. Benefits may also be cerfitfied for up to a year back.

How to Begin

If you are a veteran...
  • Speak with your employer about wanting to be able to use your benefits while being trained in your occupation. All apprenticeship programs are approved for this purpose, and most (but not all) other occupations are eligible.

Please direct them to the Memo for Employers and have them contact our office for more information on the approval process.

If you are an employer...

  • If you are an employer and you wish to have your employees be able to certify their GI Bill benefits while training in your program, please view the Memo to Employers for an overview of what is expected and contact our office to start the approval process.

The Memo, Application for Approval & two other supporting documents can be found in the right hand navigation bar under "Employers".
