Department of Administrative Services

State employees and citizens can receive notice of the unexpected* closure of state agencies through the FlashAlert system. Notices can be received as text messages, emails or smartphone alerts. The Department of Administrative Services also makes closure information available through the media and a website.

FlashAlert notices (texts, emails or smartphone alerts) are used only for large-scale closures such as all Executive Branch state agencies in a city, county or region. FlashAlert is not used to announce closure of a single state building. Review the wording at right for a sample building closure notice, and note the "Terms of use" at the close of this page.

Building closures are announced by region: (1) Portland/Salem, (2) Eugene/Roseburg, (3) Medford/Grants Pass/Klamath Falls, (4) Bend/Central Oregon, and (5) Pendleton/Eastern Oregon. This gives FlashAlert subscribers a choice of which closure notices they receive.

Ready to sign up? Get basic instructions below in the "I want to be a subscriber" section, or click the yellow button.

No, not if you updated your account after Oct. 1, 2017.

If you did not update your account after Oct. 1, 2017, or you are not sure when you last updated it, log into your FlashAlert account and go to "My Subscriptions" to confirm or change existing subscriptions.

To add a subscription, select your region, search for "State of Oregon" and choose the region(s) you wish to add to your subscription.

You may not get the closure notices that you want.

In the past, the state used one account for all closure notices statewide. Then in October 2017, a change was made to use five regional accounts. This means you can sign up for closure notices by region. If you want to know about all closures statewide, sign up for all five regions. Otherwise, sign up for only the regions that apply to your work.

If you use the FlashAlert phone app, an update is available for iOS devices as of August 2017. FlashAlert updated the Android version in fall 2016. If you need phone app support, please contact FlashAlert at
If you need more information about building closures, visit the building closures webpage. State employees should speak to their supervisor if they need additional information.

Terms of use

If you sign up for the FlashAlert service for the purpose of receiving state building closure notices from DAS, you agree to the following:

1.The Oregon Department of Administrative Services makes available the FlashAlert system as a courtesy. The system serves as an additional level of communication between DAS and interested parties, including state employees who want to know when Executive Branch agencies close because of inclement weather or other factors. Technical difficulties may cause this notification system to malfunction or delay message delivery. DAS is not responsible for such mishaps.

2.State employees have a responsibility to obtain notice of state building closures using the resources listed in state policy (see link below). Employees should speak to their supervisor if they have questions about the process the state uses to close offices, how the state communicates closures, the role of the employee, and the employment rules that apply.
State policy: Temporary Interruption of Employment

3.Signing up for a FlashAlert account is free. However, a user cannot hold DAS responsible for any fees or charges incurred for messages the user receives from FlashAlert. Users have the responsibility to confirm with their mobile device service provider the terms of their account for any device used to receive messages using FlashAlert, including whether fees apply to incoming text messages.

4.When cell phone or email accounts change or close, the user has the sole responsibility to update their account information in FlashAlert in order to receive future closure notices.

*DAS does not use FlashAlert to announce planned closures such as state holidays.
