New World Screwworm has been confirmed in the United States
On June 3, 2026, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS)
announced the detection of New World Screwworm (NWS) in a 3-week-old calf in Zavala County, Texas. This is the first detection of NWS in the United States.
Effective immediately, all animals entering Oregon that originate in an active infested zone must meet additional import requirements.
If New World Screwworm (NWS) is found within the United States, the USDA and infested state will enact movement controls within the infested zone surrounding the detection. All warm-blooded animals must meet specific NWS import requirements, in addition to any existing import requirements. Currently active infested zones are posted to the USDA's website at
www.screwworm.gov. These requirements apply only to animals that originate in an active NWS infested zone.
In addition to any requirements for leaving an infested zone imposed by USDA or the origin state, animals entering Oregon that originate in a NWS infested zone must meet the following enhanced entry requirements (unless specifically exempted below):
- Obtain an import permit from ODA by calling 503-986-4680 no less than 48 hours prior to departure (after hours and online import permits are not allowed).
- Be treated by an authorized state or federal representative, or a USDA accredited veterinarian with an
approved and effective treatment for NWS no less than 24 hours and no more than 14 days prior to physical entry into Oregon.
- Be inspected by a USDA accredited veterinarian within 5 days of departure, and obtain a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (alternate movement documents such as Extended Equine Movement Permits, Owner-Shipper Statements, and Grazing Permits are not allowed).
- Be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterianary Inspection documenting:
- The treatment date, route of administration, and medication,
- The CVI is valid to depart the point of origin from 5 days from the date or treatment or veterinary inspection, whichever occurs first, and
- The statement "All animals were individually inspected and found free of evidence of NWS infestation".
The following animals are exempt from the specified requirements below:
- Dairy calves less than 60 days of age may be moved immediately following administration of an approved and effective treatment.
- Dairy calves less than 60 days of age must obtain an import permit no less than 24 hours prior to leaving the point of origin.
- Hatching and table eggs, and chicks under 5 days of age, originating from flocks under the supervision of the National Poultry Improvement Plan classified under 145.B, 145.C, 145.D, 145.J, 146.B, 146.C, or 146.D, meeting the requirements in OAR 603-011-1230.
