eFoils

The eFoil design is a flat board mechanically propelled by an internal combustion engine or an electric motor.

In Oregon, all watercraft powered by a motor (gasoline, diesel, or electric) must be titled and registered with the State Marine Board.

State Requirements

Registration and Identifying Numbers:

An eFoil must be titled, registered, and issued a Certificate of Number to operate on Oregon waterways. The Certificate of Number must be carried when underway.

Registration numbers must be applied to the hull of the eFoil. Though eFoils have minimal freeboard, identifying numbers must follow placement and spacing as all other motorized boats.

Be painted on or permanently attached to the forward half of the vessel's freeboard or deck;
Be in plain vertical block characters of not less than 3 inches in height;
Have spaces that are equal to the width of letters and numbers.
Contrast with the color of the background to be distinctly visible and legible;
Read from left to right.

Education:

Because mechanical foils can reach speeds well over 10 miles per hour, operators must take a boating safety education course and carry a Boating Safety Education Card when operating the foil.

Required Equipment:

Properly fitting US Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket, readily accessible, for each person on board. Oregon law requires kids 12 and under to wear their life jackets on all boats when underway.
Sound-producing device (whistle).
Engine Cut-Off switch must be worn if equipped.
Out-of-state motorized boaters must purchase an Out-of-State Aquatic Invasive Species Permit before launching on Oregon waterways. Owners must also have a valid state registration. Please Clean, Drain, Dry your craft after every use.
