Suggested lead: New hours at the Astoria DMV will be 9 to 5, Monday through Friday.
SALEM – The Astoria DMV office will open at 9 a.m. instead of 8 a.m. beginning April 1. Public Information Officer David House said the change is one of several adjustments DMV is making around the state to cut expenses:
House: DMV has reduced its number of employees across the state. We’ve consolidated offices and of course we’ve closed for several statewide furloughs for the past four years. :10
House said changing the hours for the public to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will give staff more time for back office activities. It’s one of several strategies DMV is using to respond to tightened budgets.
House: Sometimes we add or subtract a lunch break for employees; that helps us distribute the break times. In many cases employees work at more than one field office so there’s a lot of factors that go into the decision. :13
Before visiting any DMV office, it’s a good idea to go online at Oregon DMV.com to see what documents you need or in some cases, to complete the transaction online without even having to visit a DMV office. Reporting from Salem, I’m Shelley Snow.
House: There are back office activities that we do in the morning to prepare for the public to come in so that can be one way we can deal with it by opening one hour earlier. :11
