Eastern Oregon crews smooth the way
Maintenance worker on eastern Oregon road
Mike Corley of Ukiah Maintenance takes care of the road.
Oregon’s mild spring sent ODOT Maintenance crews in Umatilla and Morrow counties out in force. During April, May and June, they spent 377 hours:
  • patching potholes;
  • clearing trash off of more than 900 shoulder miles of highway; cleaning 68 miles of highway ditches; and
  • clearing 30 culverts;

They spent an additional 335 hours working on other highway drainage issues.

During the same time period in Malheur, Grant and Harney counties, ODOT invested over $414,000 in bridge and highway projects, including:
  • $150,000 worth of bridge deck resurfacing;
  • more than $130,000 for concrete bridge components and repair; and
  • over $17,000 in traffic control operations and signage at multiple work sites.

Not much stops ODOT’s Region 5 crews from plowing ahead!

Summer sun shines on OTIA bridges, jobs
Bridge near Elkton
The Elkton bridge has been replaced and is open to traffic.
In July, the OTIA III State Bridge Delivery Program saw strong increases in jobs at all levels. Summer weather allowed contractors to get back into the field, and construction jobs increased by 434 over June. Design jobs increased by 239, and program management jobs increased by 281.

Of the 365 bridges in the program:
  • 110 are currently under construction; and
  • 84 have been completed and opened to traffic.

Bridge program jobs sustained in July:
  • Direct: 2,354 direct jobs
  • Indirect: 2,723 (supply and support positions not directly tied to actual construction, and jobs created when workers spend their paychecks)

In addition, the bridge program accomplished the following in July:
  • Generated more than $18 million in total income
  • Generated nearly $1.6 million in tax revenue
  • Kept 100 percent of bridges free from height restrictions
  • Kept 94 percent of bridges free from width restrictions
  • Kept 94 percent of bridges free from weight restrictions

Based on the 2007 annual economic stimulus report, the bridge program spent more than $115 million on construction, design and program management in 2006. Of those expenditures, 75.5 percent went to Oregon firms. Between 2007 and 2010, the bridge program is expected to sustain an average of more than 3,400 jobs per year. Overall, the bridge program will sustain an annual average of approximately 2,500 jobs. Creating jobs and supporting businesses in Oregon are making this 10-year program a key investment in Oregon’s economy.

DMV streamlines new regulation
As of Sept. 15, DMV now can consider additional identity documents, including an applicant’s current driver’s license or ID card, to determine if an individual meets the name requirement. The rule change does not affect other requirements under Senate Bill 1080. The law still requires applicants for first-time, renewal or replacement driver’s licenses, instruction permits or ID cards to present government-issued documents for:
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal status in the country – such as a government-issued birth certificate or U.S. passport, or a foreign passport with U.S. immigration documents.
  • Proof of Social Security number – such as a Social Security card, employment or tax documents.
  • Or proof that a person is not entitled to a Social Security number, if the applicant is not eligible for an SSN – such as immigration documents that do not give permission to work in the United States.
  • Proof of full legal name.

These requirements are in addition to longstanding requirements for a driver’s license, such as proof of an Oregon residence address, passage of all tests and payment of the required fees.
