The Federal Highway Administration has awarded more than $1.7 million to Oregon’s Scenic Byways Program. Seven projects around the state will receive funds for replacing guardrail, improving coordination among agencies, purchasing land, adding signage and other projects.
“This is the second highest amount of funding we’ve received in the 10+ years we’ve had the program,” said the Oregon Department of Transportation’s Scenic Byways Program Manager Patrick Moran. “We did exceptionally well this year.” The winning byways and their reimbursable funds are:
- Historic Columbia River Highway: guardrail replacement $664,276
- Pacific Coast Scenic Byway: Whale Cove – Protecting a Treasure $650,000
- Mt. Hood Scenic Byway: Timberline Welcome Plaza $288,000
- Cascade Lake National Scenic Byway: Facility Planning and Design $112,000
- Hells Canyon: Administration of Corridor Management Plan $25,000
- Mt. Hood Scenic Byway: Management Plan Implementation Phase III $25,000
- Volcanic Legacy Scenic Byway: Management Plan Implementation $24,000
$1,788,276
The funds for several byways will help reinvigorate the promotion, coordination and care of the designated areas. Others have specific needs, such as the Hells Canyon Byway, where funds will help complete the Interpretive Plan for the entire stretch of scenic roadway, or the Mt. Hood Byway, where funds will create an educational area to welcome visitors. At Whale Cove near Depoe Bay on the Oregon coast, funds will help complete the purchase of 13 acres of forest, grassy coastal prairie and rocky coastal headland.
Overall, 221 projects in 43 States received funding from the federal program. For more detail, visit http://www.bywaysonline.org/news/2008/1309.
