The Oregon Department of Transportation reminds drivers to be prepared for snowy and icy conditions as they travel through Oregon this week.

Severe driving conditions are affecting state highways throughout Oregon. To get safely to your destination, ODOT reminds drivers to use chains or traction devices when necessary and to drive slowly and carefully. State officials report several crashes have occurred because drivers have not been using chains and were driving too fast for conditions.

Chains are required in Oregon whenever winter conditions exist and SNOW ZONE signs are posted. Fines can be up to $145 for not using chains when required. ODOT’s travel information Web site, www.TripCheck.com, has up-to-date information on road conditions, chain requirements and diagrams on where to place chains on various vehicle combinations.

In addition, ODOT offers the following tips for getting to your destination safely:
  • Oregon’s weather can change quickly and without warning. Before your trip, visit www.tripcheck.com for road conditions and chain requirements. In Oregon you can call 511 or 800-977-6368 for road conditions. Outside Oregon, call 503-588-2941.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to chain up. Pull over to a safe level area such as a designated chain-up area. Wear reflective, warm clothing and lie with your legs pointed away from the travel lane.
  • When traveling through a snow zone, keep a larger than normal distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Remember: you can slide even with chains, so drive carefully and slowly.
  • Oregon chain law is designed to keep you and your fellow drivers safe in treacherous conditions. Follow the law and don’t take unnecessary risks.
